7.8.8 Seismic Accelerometers

The type of accelerometer used is the ESM8000-3 Tri-axial Accelerometer Module, manufactured by Geophysical Dynamics, Inc. [14] This accelerometer is only 2-inches cube in dimension, and 0.15 kilograms in mass. It is specialized for use in seismic measurements.

There are two accelerometers. One is attached to a foot of the SOM. (It is not in the upper part because of dampers in the legs.) The other is in the WISP. As the WISP descends, it will have a unique vantage point for measuring seismic waves. Comparison of seismic measurements take from the SOM and the WISP can help geologists determine the depth of a remote Europaquake.
